HackMIT is MIT’s largest hackathon. Over a 24-hour period in early fall, 1,000 hackers from around the world gather on MIT’s campus to experiment and innovate on software and hardware projects. This is your weekend to dust off old ideas or try something completely new. Imagine the craziest projects possible, and work on the hack of your dreams!
Of course, as long as you’re an undergraduate at any college in the world! Non-MIT college undergraduate students must be at least 18 years old. Unfortunately, high school and graduate students can’t attend (MIT M.Eng. students are eligible, however).
Nope! Admission is free and includes food, drinks, overnight hosting, and lots of swag!
We’ll provide food for all meals from Saturday’s breakfast to Sunday’s brunch. If you have dietary restrictions, we’ll try our best to accommodate them.
Hacking all night is fun, but you should also get some rest! MIT students have generously offered their rooms as places to sleep and shower. If you'd like an MIT student host, please let us know in the confirmation form!
Bring a valid student ID for admission and a laptop for hacking. We’ll be providing pretty much everything else—air mattresses, toiletries, stickers, snacks, and more! If you'd like, you can bring a blanket, pillow, and towel. To borrow hardware during the hackathon, you’ll need a government-issued photo ID.
If you’re traveling more than 30 miles to MIT, we’ll partially reimburse your travel provided that you upload your travel receipts before the event on our confirmation portal. Students within Massachusetts receive up to $100 in reimbursement, students within North America receive up to $200, and other international students receive up to $500. Please note, these numbers are caps, and we will only reimburse the least expensive route. We will also send free buses to select schools—see the confirmation portal for more details!
Teams are at most 4 people. You could have designated teammates when you registered, or you could have also registered individually. We ran the lottery by teams, so either your whole team received admission or none of your team received admission (except for automatically admitted MIT students).
If you don’t have a team now, don’t stress! We’ll have team formation and ideation events geared towards helping you find people to work with.
MIT students that register by July 30th and confirm by August 12th will be guaranteed admission. If you don’t confirm your attendance by August 12th, we’ll be taking walk-ins on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Unfortunately, we cannot increase reimbursement caps out of fairness to our hackers. Sorry about that! If the cost of coming to MIT is prohibitive, we recommend you check out other hackathons closer to you!
We’ll provide some hardware such as Arduinos, Pebbles, Raspberry Pis and more! You are more than welcome to bring your own hardware and basic tools to work with. A full list of hardware will be released as we get closer to the event.
